If you are interested in the Lay Speaking Ministries program, please contact your district drector for an application form. This annual report form is required each year to maintain enrollment. It asks the lay speaker to reflect on the previous year and list areas of ministry as well as other discipleship questions. Yes, lay speakers are accountable to our church families, The United Methodist Church, and, most especially, to God.

Basic and Advanced Lay Speakers Training - September 10, 11 - Western Reserve United Methodist Church
Friday, September 10, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 11, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 PM at Western Reserve UMC, 4580 Canfield Rd., Canfield. Cost is $30 for snacks, continental breakfast, lunch, and book(s). Scholarships are available.
Basic Training: Please bring a Book of Worship, a Book of Discipline, Bible, notebook, and pen or pencil. (Read through the material. Scripture will be given for a 3 minute speech.)
Advanced Training: Lay Speakers Teach Adults, using the text titled Start Here by Barbara Bruce. The Conference Committee on Lay Speaking Ministries feels this course will help all lay speakers whether a teacher or not, and we believe we are all teachers.

Married to Bill for 47 years, three grown children, 5 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Member of 1st church in East Liverpool since merger in 1977. Currently; Lay Leader, sec. of Ad. Min. Council, Vice Pres. UMW, play in handbell choir, asst. Vacation Bible School director, co-teach 3,4 & 5 grade Sunday School, lead weekly Women's Bible Study, member of Rebekah-Joy Circle, sec. for board of local food pantry F.I.S.H., newly elected Pres. of Church Women United in E.L.

Mahoning Valley District Pastor of the Year - Bill Johnson
Joined Girard UMC July 4,1976. Became active in Youngstown District Lay Speakers in 1977. District president of Lay Speakers in early 1980's lead to District Supt., Dr. Judy Olin, appointing Bill as DA at Ellsworth UMC. Undergraduate degree finished 1990. Seminary and Course of Study over the last 10 years with Graduation from Course of Study in August of 2010. William served Southington UMC as a Student Pastor(1990-1994), Associate Pastor (part-time) at Western Reserve UMC from 2001-2005, Local Pastor of Salineville UMC and Highlandtown UMC, 2006-2007, and is now serving at Brookfield UMC as a Full-time Local Pastor.
Bill has a daughter, Katy Acerra, who is due in Oct.(Joseph William Acerra) and lives with her husband, Justin, in Columbus, Ohio.
