Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

>Mission Opportunities

HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF-
  • Pray - organize a prayer vigil in your community
  • Give Money - collect funds through your local church treasurer
Designate them to Mahoning Valley District work team fund for teams organized to respond or Designate them to East Ohio Annual Conference UMCOR Fund #418325 Haiti Emergency.
  • Give Time - hold a fund raiser or dinner dedicated to Haiti relief.
  • Give needed supplies - The MIdwest Distribution Center and Sager Brown have an ongoing ministry of delivering emergency supplies in large quantities. You can best help by sending kits to or volunteering in these organizations to re-supply items already being shipped. Sending clothing or bulky items to Haiti is NOT helpful. (See below, Mission in Motion if you are interested in traveling to the Midwest Distribution Center with Lisbon UMC)
  • Volunteer to go on or support a work team. Volunteers-In-Mission is already in Haiti and is organizing additional trips.
  • Support One Great Hour of Sharing - the offering which funds the UMCOR presence already in Haiti.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, GO TO http://www.eocumc.com/ which has several links to UMCOR. You can also contact Bill Sutherin, Mahoning Valley District Disaster Relief Coordinator (330-426-9608) for information about evolving plans.
If your church has a Mission Opportunity that is open to participants from other churches, please let the Mahoning Valley District know so we can include on this page. (Call the district and leave a message for Debbie Bryant, or e-mail the district and ask Kathy to pass on to Debbie.)

Mission in Motion… (You can join them on the next two trips)
A team of 6 members of Lisbon First UMC traveled more than 560 miles to South Central Illinois – IN JANUARY!! – in response to God’s call to
help the least and the lost. The Midwest Mission Distribution Center, a project of the North-Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist
Church, is a marvel or organization and productivity! Materials to construct health kits for Haiti poured in all week long from all over the Midwest, and we (and about 50 other day volunteers) were kept constantly busy unpacking, counting, packing, and preparing items for immediate shipping. In that one short week, approx.. 3000 health kits were sent on to Haiti in response to UMCOR’s request. In
addition, we packed baby layettes, flood clean-up buckets, and school kits. We were impressed with the spirit of joy and commitment of
EVERYONE at the Center, and we felt “connected” to the work of the church in a powerful way! We have scheduled two trips to the Distribution Center in 2011. If anyone would like to join us as teams form, please call Lisbon Church. There is something there for EVERYONE to do, regardless of age or skill!! Thank you to Charolette Davis, Ed Kupka, Rick May, Pat Tressler, & Mary Lee
Vandevander for their gift of time in mission!

FAMILY PROMISE
Family Promise of Mahoning Valley is a new and innovative way to mobilize communities to help low-income families achieve and sustain their independence. Around the country, Family Promise is helping homeless families achieve independence, providing congregations with local mission activities, creating initiatives that meet community needs, giving people of all ages meaningful volunteer opportunities and building public awareness of homelessness and the needs of low-income people.
Family Promise provides shelter, meals and comprehensive assistance to homeless families. In the process, Family Promise often becomes a catalyst for community initiatives, such as transitional housing, parenting classes, and job training programs. As the work continues it brings people together, building bridges and fostering relationships that stretch across class, racial and religious boundaries.
Even if your church cannot host families in your building, you can help other churches that are hosting families.  See the list below.

NEHEMIAH ADULT WORK TEAMS
The Nehemiah Mission of Cleveland had a very busy summer hosting over 600 mission guests and completing over 70 projects and hosting 2 weeks of vacation Bible school. There is still much to do. The vast majority of work teams come in over the summer months. The mission is a twelve month facility and is constantly receiving requests for help.

Currently there are requests for four wheelchair ramps, two homes that need serious interior work, an inner city church with multiple needs and a home on the west side of Cleveland that is being rehabbed to become an annex of the mission for additional mission team housing. The mission is also partnering with The Harp Mission to help distribute personal hygiene kits, clothes and furniture.

In order to accomplish all of this plus the anticipated requests, the mission is asking for adult work teams to consider week long mission trips during the months of September through May. For more information or to make arrangements for your trip visit
www.nehemiahmission.org or call (440) 263-8125.
